Which entrance do I use?

If you are driving, the main entrance at what3words ///dabbled.prices.exits. If you are walking or cycling in from the John Muir Way, the back track at ///late.stylists.magnets. The back track is not a vehicle entrance.

Why does my satnav take me somewhere else?

The postcode EH39 5NY covers a wide rural area and its map pin sits closer to our back track than to the main entrance, so satnavs often route you there. Use the what3words address for the main entrance instead.

No bus serves the estate. The 120 and 121 run into North Berwick, and from there it is about fifty minutes on foot or ten minutes by taxi.

Can I walk in from the John Muir Way?

Yes, any time there is no event on. During events the John Muir Way routes you away from the working farm, and we would ask you to stay on it.

Do I need to book parking?

No. Parking is free and you do not need to book. It is on grass, so in very wet weather please take it steadily and follow any marshals on site.

Balgone is a working estate on the B1345, two miles south of North Berwick. Here is how to reach us however you are travelling, and the one thing to know before you set off.

How are you getting here?

Balgone sits just off the B1345, about ten minutes south of North Berwick and roughly forty five minutes from Edinburgh.

Put ///dabbled.prices.exits into your phone, not the postcode.

The postcode EH39 5NY covers a wide rural area and its pin sits nearer our back track than the main gate, so satnavs routinely send drivers down a farm track that is not a way in. The what3words address takes you to the right gate.

Leave the A1 and follow signs for North Berwick.
Pick up the B1345 heading south out of the town.
Watch for the Balgone Estate signs and turn in at the main entrance.
Follow the track round to the parking area and HERD.

Parking is free, on grass, and you do not need to book.

When you arrive

Parking

Free, unbooked, and on grass in the paddock by the patch. During events there is a separate events car park with marshals on hand. In very wet weather take it steadily and follow the marshals.

Blue badge

Accessible parking is in front of the café. During events it moves to the events car park, where marshals will point you to it.

Coaches and minibuses

Coaches park in the events car park. Please let us know in advance so we can have someone meet you.

Getting around on site

The area around HERD and the parking is level but it is a working farm, so expect grass, gravel and farm tracks rather than pavement. Sensible footwear is a good idea in any season.

Dogs

Welcome on leads. There is livestock on the estate and along the John Muir Way sections nearby.

Toilets and payment

Toilets are on site. We take card and contactless.

Plan your day

Coffee and a lake walk

About an hour. Park up, take a coffee from HERD and walk the Balgone Lakes circuit.

Half a day with children

Allow three hours or so, more in pumpkin and sunflower season when the trails are running.

A walkers' pit stop

Coffee, food, toilets and water, right on the John Muir Way between North Berwick and East Linton.

Make a day of it

We are a few minutes from some of the best of East Lothian. North Berwick Law is the hill you walk round on the way in, and the summit is worth the detour. The town has the beach, the harbour and the Scottish Seabird Centre. Tantallon Castle sits on the cliffs to the east, and Dirleton Castle and its gardens are a short run west. The John Muir Way links most of it together if you would rather walk than drive.
